Projects by Christine Hill (*1968, lives in New York and Berlin) combine artistic work with everyday life. They provide an insight into various production processes and, among other things, enable the viewer to participate directly.
The “Volksboutique” has grown away from any concrete connection with a specific place and has developed into a kind of travelling enterprise. Basically, it is a label under which different products are produced and specific forms of organisation are tested. In 1996, the artist opened a fully operating second-hand shop in Berlin in which she also acted the part of saleswoman. The public were also invited to play the double role of observer and customer at one and the same time, thereby gaining an insight into the artist's working processes while being directly involved with the project. The visitors' interest was attracted not only by the project's organisation but also by the direct interaction and transparency of the artistic working process. The “Volksboutique” is a venue, a container for ideas and a sales platform. Christine Hill not only sells her products under her brand name, she also acts as her own manager.
