Marc Camille Chaimowicz: Zürich Suite

8. April 2006  – 18. June 2006

Featuring artworks by:
Marc Camille Chaimowicz

Marc Camille Chaimowicz’s installations and performances from the early 1970s revolve thematically around the opposition between the intimate and the formal, the private and the public, and the circumstances of life therein. They situate the artist (born in post-War Paris) in a new generation of artists who distanced themselves from the prevailing discourse of art, and through their working methods consciously resisted categorisation. Chaimowicz com-bines various media such as sculpture, painting, drawing and photography, with elements from the decorative arts, such as furniture, ceramics, carpets and wallpaper, from which he composes complex arrangements. These often have a great effect on the space they occupy and strike an anachronistic and melancholy chord. Metaphor, synaesthetic sense perception and the procedural are at the forefront of his entire oeuvre. Over recent years, Marc Camille Chaimowicz, who began work in 1969 and was among the first European artists to work with performances and installations, has been rediscovered by a younger generation of artists, and adopted as a significant role model. In this retrospective solo exhibition the migros museum für gegenwartskunst is exhibiting a selection of works spanning a period of four decades.
